The Lone Star State

Long time, no blog. I'm going to make a serious effort to blog more regularly... The summer went by crazy fast, and I am surprisingly so glad for it to be over. Mainly because the hubs was out of town for work. I'm glad to be settling back into the daily routine that fall brings- albeit busier, and colder. The end of August was definitely one of my highlights of the summer, because we were able to take another trip down to Texas. We have family and friends down there- and that heat is always welcome in my books. The flights were horrendous (that's another post waiting to happen which would be titled #nevereverusairways). We arrived safely which brings me to my post of:

The 10 best things to See & Do in Texas

Dallas/Houston/Galveston area, as that's all we had time for this trip

Dallas
  1. Downtown Dallas
  2. JFK Site & 6th Floor Museum
  3. Six Flags and/or Hurricane Harbour
Houston
  1. NASA Space Centre
  2. House of Jerky
  3. Houston Premium Outlets
Galveston
  1. Galveston- The Strand
  2. Schlitterbahn
Fort Worth
  1. Fort Worth Zoo
  2. Bureau of Printing & Engraving
  3. Stockyards

I'll start with Dallas on this post:

Downtown Dallas is probably one of my favorite "downtowns" that we have visited. It's a great mix of cool architecture, shopping, restaurants, green spaces, and things to do! Besides of course the famous JFK site there is a wealth of neat little shops to see. Be sure to check out the McKinney Avenue Trolley (which is free, and one of the best ways to really check out downtown).

There is some great shopping to do also. We enjoyed walking around Highland Park (lord knows we couldn't afford anything there haha!), the "West End" of Dallas, and the design/arts district (which has really unique and affordable boutiques!). You can find a better description, and more on this site.

And last but not least, the JFK Memorial/6th Floor Museum. This was one of my favorite things to take in when we visited this past August. Plan for a few hours (at least three) if you want to really take your time through it. We paid the extra and did the audio tour as well; which is well worth it in my opinion. (You get your own set of headphones and follow along through the museum- really interesting, so much history!).

There is so much to see and do in Texas, but Dallas has always been a hit with us when we go. It's not bad for driving in (compared to  Houston or LA), and reasonably easy to navigate around in!

I don't know if I've mentioned this, but Dallas is where the hubs was born! He only lived there until he was about 2 1/2 and then they moved back to Canada- so he adores it anytime we can go down! (So do I). I have a couple very close friends in Texas as well, so it's such a treat to see them when we go down!

Downtown Dallas (December 2011, our first trip together)

Loving the history/architecture right in the city!

One of the coolest chapels I've ever seen; again right in Downtown Dallas!
